  • Hitch lock
  • Tracking devices

Doors and locks

Make sure your windows and doors are in good condition. Check the locks are working and in good condition. You can also buy aftermarket locks for added protection.

Keep in mind that most insurers will decline claims for theft if forcible entry was not used to enter the caravan.

Storing your caravan in a secure location is important to prevent theft. You may opt to store your caravan at CaSSOA (Caravan Storage Site Owners' Association), secure caravan storage site. These sites provide excellent security including perimeter fencing, access control, exit/entry system, CCTV, alarms and fire protection.

Many insurers will lower your premium if your caravan is stored at a CaSSOA site. Click here to compare quotes.

Alarms work by emitting a loud noise when activated in case of unauthorised entry or towing.

They are a good deterrant, scaring away thieves and alerting anyone nearby.

You may get a lower premium for having an alarm fitted.

Wheel locks

Having good security on your wheels is a good deterrent and is essential to stopping your caravan being towed away easily. Whereas wheel clamps attach to the wheel, locking and immobilising it, they can still be removed with expertise. An AL-KO wheel lock attaches to the chassis which makes it virtually impossible to move.

Hitch locks

Hitch locks work by attaching to the hitch and preventing anyone from hooking their vehicle to your caravan and towing it away.

Most insurers require that you either have a hitch lock or wheel lock attached to the caravan as the minimum requirement when left unattended.

Tracking Devices

In recent years there has been a surge of tracking devices being used to track the location of your caravan in the event of theft. Some more expensive caravan models come with pro active tracking as standard and require a subscription to keep them active.

Pro active tracking devices work by sending the location of your caravan to the security control room when it has been moved without your knowledge. This information is then passed on to the police. These are more some of the more expensive security solutions but provide extra cover in case of theft.

Most insurers also provide a lower premium if a pro active tracking device is fitted. Click here to compare quotes.
